RELATIONSHIPS

Stop, drop, de-escalate

Arguments — whether with your partner, your kids, or that mom in the PTA group chat — can spiral fast. But before you draft a text you’ll regret or raise your voice louder than your toddler’s tantrum, try these therapist-approved phrases that can cool down even the tensest of moments:

🗣“Help me understand.” A simple way to shift from defense mode to curiosity mode. Bonus: People love feeling heard.

🤝“That’s a good point.” No, really. Validating the other person’s perspective is like hitting the “mute” button on an escalating argument.

“I need a break.” If your heart’s racing and your brain’s foggy, step away. Come back when your inner peace is back online.

💡“What can we do differently next time?” Conflict doesn’t have to be a dead-end — it can be a strategy session for future success.

And if all else fails? Crack a (non-sarcastic) joke. Studies show that humor can make conflicts less intense and relationships stronger. Just make sure it's lighthearted and not cutting — there’s a fine line between “diffusing tensions” and “starting round two.”

PARENTING

Tough skin, soft heart.

Let’s be honest: every parent wants to give their kids more than they had. But sometimes, trying to give them everything can backfire. Teens from affluent families are actually struggling with high rates of anxiety, depression, and general unhappiness. Why? Experts say it’s because we’re overindulging them, leaving them unprepared for the real world.

So, how do we raise a teen who’s grounded, confident, and emotionally strong (and not just a walking entitled meme)? Start with these expert-approved strategies

  1. Praise character, not just achievements. Encourage effort and growth over results. Let them know they’re loved even when they fail.

  2. Assign meaningful work. Chores, part-time jobs, or even helping out around the house teach them responsibility — and that they’re part of the family team.

  3. Help them find their purpose. Let them explore different passions and interests. It’s not about being the best at something — it’s about finding meaning.

  4. Set limits. Let them make mistakes, but within boundaries. They’ll learn to think through their choices when they know the consequences.

  5. Prioritize sleep. Teenagers need 8–9 hours of sleep for their brains to function properly. It sounds simple, but it can make all the difference in their mood and behavior.

At the end of the day, giving your teen a strong emotional foundation is more important than giving them everything they think they want. And hey, sometimes the best lessons come from letting them face the challenges they’re trying to avoid.

AND ALSO

Tone with chairs and wine.

No barre studio? No problem. You get a full-body workout at home using just a chair and — wait for it — a wine bottle. Sounds like a Friday night, but it’s actually a great way to tone your muscles while being easy on your joints.

Barre combines elements of ballet, Pilates, and yoga to create low-impact exercise that strengthens your core, improves posture, and increases flexibility. Here are three exercises you can do at home:

Parallel Thighs (Lower Body): Use the back of a chair for balance, bend your knees flighty, and lower down in a controlled squat motion. Start with 30 seconds, then work your way up.

T-Slice (Core): Seated, pull arms into a T-shape while keeping your core engaged. Add leg lifts for extra challenge.

Over/Under (Upper Body): Hold a wine bottle (or lightweight) in each hand, rotate palms over and under. Pretend you're pouring wine… but for your arms.

Mushroom coffee: Trendy wellness or just a fungi fad? With claims of better immunity, brainpower, and stress relief, medicinal mushrooms like lion’s mane and chaga are getting all the buzz. But does it actually work? Here’s the scoop before you sip.
